En 1944, en Angleterre, alors que la Seconde Guerre mondiale fait rage, le pays est soumis à des bombardements. Des enfants sont évacués de Manchester vers le village d'Oakworth, dans le West Riding du Yorkshire. Ils se lient d'amitié avec un soldat de l'armée américaine qui est loin de chez lui.
